Why Your Dog Hates Back to School Season

Kids aren’t the only ones who dread these three little words, the ones that start to get thrown around as the calendar inches closer to the start of the school year.. It happens every year as the summer winds down.

You can almost hear the children shudder even as you just think the words…BACK TO SCHOOL. As most parents jump for joy thinking of quiet mornings, under your table or lying somewhere nearby, the family dog sighs. Their head sinks low and their big eyes turn down at the thought of their best friend being gone again.

You can almost see the sorrow in those eyes as supplies gather on the table, new clothes are bought and book bags are packed. No more comfy morning snuggles in bed until a late hour, extra treats snuck under the table all day long, games of fetch or tug-of-war or concierge service at the back door for on demand potty trips. In fact, all the extra hugs and all the extra attention just disappears while the kids are in school.

Sigh.

We often don’t think about our pets being affected by the big back to school shuffle. We’re so busy getting our kids ready for a successful school year that we forget our dogs are losing a lot of play time with their best friend. Pets and children have a special bond because they have so much in common. They are both relatively close to the ground; they both love to cuddle, to play and going outside is the highlight of any day. It’s no wonder that they quickly become close, especially over summer when house activities are in full gear.

The bell rings and another school year starts.

The crazy mornings of getting everyone ready, do they have their homework, their lunch and get them out the door on time to get on the bus. Then our day starts full of errands to run, buying school supplies, meeting friends for lunch, and the list goes on ALL day long! Before you know it, it’s time to pick up the children from school, take them to soccer practice or dance class and before you know it, cooking dinner and checking homework is underway! Where did the day go?

Then we look down and see our precious pooch, with his big eyes looking up at us, wagging his tail and then the guilt set in. The dog hasn’t been out all day! Instead of rushing home during hectic day, make your life easier and keep your dog VERY happy, call It’s Raining Cats & Dogs!
